December 2017 News
No Meetings Until March
With our unpredictable weather in the winter months, several years ago we voted to not have meetings in January and February. So, enjoy the holidays, stay warm and we will see you in March.
We will have the museum open for one day only -- Feb.24 - during the Conneaut Lake Ice Festival. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The exhibit committee is working now to update some displays and add a new one: A Train display.
Tim Kaider, Conneaut Lake's longtime mayor and a historical society member, has donated his esteemed train display to the museum. It is unique in that it is laid out to the specifications of the town and Conneaut Lake Park and is a really neat display.
We are so honored that he trusted us with his long time passion and are anxious to share it with the public! Hope you can stop and see it.
The museum will be closed then until the end of April.
Barbara J Ride
We finished 2017 with a ride on the Barbara J to view all the Christmas trees around the lake.We had 63 people aboard and although it was chilly, everyone said it was a wonderful evening!
We also had our annual Christmas dinner at the Iroquois Club and had a great time, enjoying each other's fellowship, great dinner and wonderful singing, led by our own Carolyn Melby!
New Activities Planned
The board is making plans for the 2018 year.
We will start with the annual Conneaut Lake Cusine on May 7.
Instead of an auction this year, we are planning to have an "appraisal" event -- patterned after the Antique Road Show. We haven't set a date yet, but hope to have a number of professionals to give appraisals of items brought to them for an estimated value.
We held one years ago and it was well received and we thought this may be something different.
We also are planning another "trivia night."We had one in 2016 and it was a lot of fun as well as educational! We have had lots of requests to do it again, so watch for announcements.
We also will have our annual cruise in on July 7 and the kayak race on Aug. 5.
It promises to be a busy season, so plan on joining us.
New Program Chairman
After serving as program committee chairman for many years, Bobbie Moyers has chosen to step down. Diane Domnick has agreed to assume the role of program committee chairman. If you have ideas for programs or would like to serve on the committee, please let her know.
We have a new puzzle for sale. It is an 11 by 17 inch, 150-piece color photo of the Oakland Beach Hotel. We will put it online to purchase as soon as we calculate the postage, but if you want it for Christmas, call Jane Smith at 814-337-6377 and she will make arrangements to it to you. Cost is $10 plus tax.
New Tour Contact
After many many years of being the contact person to arrange special tours, George Rutherford has given up that task. He will lead tours, just has too many things on his mind and often forgot to go down so asked the board to name somebody new!
Anyone wishing to arrange a special tour may now contact Julia Catalano at 724-9841 or Chuck Groger at 814-382-8722.
