Exciting News: Wooly Mammoth Exhibit Expanded
|

Museum Hours: |
Our society has some exciting news to share. In 1958, dozens of mastodon and wooly mammoth bones were discovered in the area near what is now Nye’s Marina in Conneaut Lake. With no formal organization at Conneaut Lake to accept responsibilities for their care, the bones were turned over to Allegheny College for preservation. They now have been turned over to our society to display for the community to share. At the conclusion of a special program presented recently by retired college professor Dr. Samuel Harrison, he called our president Bobbie Moyers to the front. He then announced the college was giving the bones to the society on a permanent loan for display. Bobbie and our society members in attendance were stunned to say the least. The bones now are on display and supplement existing displays including a replica of a wooly mammoth purchased by the local elementary schools for our society. The bones are thousands of years old and include one tusk, measuring more than 60 inches in length and weighing 100 pounds. They are rare and make an exciting addition to our exhibits. Dave Lynch recorded Dr. Harrison’s speech, in which he told of how Conneaut Lake – the state’s largest natural lake – was formed through the glacier age. It was a fascinating program and a very rewarding one for us and for our community! Please stop and view the exhibits and get a glimpse into the size of the mammals which once roamed the Conneaut Lake area. |
