Upcoming Meetings

"The Mupheres" -- They Came, They Stayed, They Helped Make History."September 18th

About Us.jpg

A panel of "mupheres" (also known as people from the Pittsburgh area) will talk about what brought them here and why they stayed. We'll also hear of others who made their mark here -- and look forward to hearing from the audience about their experience with the "mupheres."

Our monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Sportsman's Club in Conneaut Lake.  It is open to public free of charge. Hall is handicapped accessible and smoke free. Refreshments will follow the program.

Racing Around the Lake
October 16

Mark Ruttenberg will speak first about his experiences racing in the Boston Marathon and then information about all the other types of racing held over the years in the Conneaut Lake area. Come and share your racing experiences!

New Puzzle

If you have memories of riding the miniature train at Conneaut Lake Park, you will love our new jigsaw puzzle -- a picture of the train. It is 150 pieces. Cost is $10, plus 60 cents tax. If you want it mailed, add $4 shipping. It will make a great gift!

Christmas Ornaments

We have three new ornaments for Christmas this year -- two which were introduced in the spring: Hotel Conneaut and Dreamland Ballroom -- and a new one, which will be available at Pumpkin Fest. It will be of the miniature train.

They are all bound to bring great memories of visits to Conneaut Lake Park.

Cost remains at $12 plus 72 cents tax.

Unfortunately, the shipping fee has increased to $3.00.

Blue Streak Pens Raffle

We will have raffle tickets for three ballpoint pens made from wood from the Blue Streak at Pumpkin Fest and at the museum prior to Pumpkin Fest.

The pens were made by Tim McKay and are very nice.

Tickets are $2 each or three for $5.

Pens will be awarded at 4:30 p.m. the final day of Pumpkin Fest, Oct. 15.

Small Business Sale

We will once again participate in the Small Business Sale on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 25 with the museum open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for early Christmas shopping.

If you or someone you know has memories of special events at Hotel Conneaut, we have the perfect item for you.

We now have a Wendell August ornament of the Hotel Conneaut available.

They will bring back memories of a prom, wedding reception, alumni dinner or special occasions to reme

Like the others we have produced, they are only $12, plus 72 cents tax.

Check us out at the museum or online in our gift shop!

Crawford Gives

The society once again participated in Crawford Gives conducted by the Crawford Heritage Community Foundation.

We received donations of $7,030 from generous supporters.

We thank all those who participated.

Your generosity and support are appreciated.

Christmas Dinner

The annual Christmas dinner for members and guests is set for Monday, Dec. 18, at the Iroquois Club.

More details will be announced next month, but wanted to let you know the date is set!

New Membership Policy

The board has adopted a new policy regarding membership renewals.

In the past, members have been kept on the rolls for three years without payment before they were removed from the rolls.

Because of insurance rules, that has been changed.

Members will be advised in the September newsletter about dues being payable for the following year.

All annual dues are due by January 1 of each year.

Members who don't pay by Jan. 15th will be notified.

The final notice will be given March 1st and if no payment is received by March 31, your name will be removed from our rolls.

Thank you for your understanding.

New Christmas Tree

We will have a new Christmas tree in front of the museum this year!

Wilma and John Davis are moving and have donated their "Tree of Light" to us in memory of their sons, Kevin and Jack.

As you know, the "Trees of Light" is a special project where people purchase the lights which are all decorated in different colors and displayed through the Christmas season.

We have not purchased one in the past because of the expense. We weren't sure those who donated money to us would have supported such an expense, so didn't purchase one.

Now, we can participate in the community "Trees of Light."

We also will have smaller decorated trees inside the museum during November and early December.

If you wish to decorate a tree, contact Judy Groger at 814-382-8722 and times will be scheduled to bring it down!

We hope to have more trees each year.

The trees will be displayed free of charge!

Two New Items in Gift Shop

We have two new items available for purchase.

After we offered the Pilsner glasses, we had numerous requests for wine glasses as people said they prefer wine over beer. So we decided to offer wine glasses as well as the Pilsner glasses.

The Wendell August wine glasses are those without the steams. They include medallions of the Blue Streak on them.

They come in a set of two and are in a nice black cardboard box. It also includes a note card with a picture of the Blue Steak and a brief history of the popular ride.

We believe they are beautiful gifts for yourself or others as you enjoy your favorite wine and possibly reminisce about the Blue Streak and your great memories of Conneaut Lake Park.

Cost is $45 plus $2.70 tax. If you want them shipped, please add another $11.00.

If you need them before May 6 (the day the museum opens), please call Jane Smith at 814-337-6377 and arrangements can be made to get them sooner.

And, don't forget, if you are a member, you receive a 10 percent discount on all purchases.

The second new item is a "gripper," -- the item you use to open jars that the lids are on too tight.

The gripper is blue in color with the words "Get a grip on life at Conneaut Lake" with the historical society logo in the center.

It is designed for functional use, but also as a memento of your visit to the museum or a reminder of life in Conneaut Lake.

Cost is only $2 plus 12 cents tax and $1 shipping.

We are always looking for new ideas for gifts to sell, so if you have an idea, please contact Jane Smith, projects and promotion chairman, at the above number.

Membership

We are always accepting new members. Cost is only $12 a year or $150 for a lifetime.

If you would like to join, just send us a check and your information: Name, address, phone number, email, and any special interest you may have.

If you are a member and would like to serve on a special committee, please contact Chuck Groger at 814-382-8722. We welcome new members and new committee members!

Ornaments

We have our new Dreamland Ballroom ornaments still available at $12, plus 72 cents tax as well.

They have been well received as people told us about their grandparents and/or parents having met there. One woman said how thrilled her grandmother was with it.

As you know, you don't have to wait until Christmas to display them. They are ornaments but can be displayed at any time.

We think they make a nice memory of days gone by at that beautiful dance hall.
